Set during the period of Israel's exile in Bablyon and Persia, the story follows young Zoroaster from disciple of the Biblical prophet Daniel to second in hand to the king, Darius the Mede. Zoroaster begins with the final prophecy of Daniel, foretelling doom, and subsequent enlightenment, for his self-willed disciple, who because of his love of a woman, is unable to transcend his own carnal desires to become a prophet like himself. Determined to marry Nehushta, an Israelite princess, Zoroaster finds himself entangled in a love/hate relationship with the queen, who loves him as much as much as she hates Nehushta, his fiancé. She maliciously contrives to separate them, and succeeds, sending Zoroaster off on a soul-searching exile in the wilderness and Nehushta into the arms of the king. Young and disillusioned Zoroaster discovers transcendental meditation in a cave, where he leaves his body to explore and learn the mysteries of the universe for three years. Once he gains the wisdom of the "all-wise" one, Zoroaster returns to the king, older and wiser than anyone on earth, and above all natural desires. He has no interest in love, even when Nehushta realizes the queen's deceptions and regrets her previous rejection of Zoroaster. He is content to be high priest of his god and advisor to the king until his tragic death at the hands of the queen, who arranged an invasion while the king was away. Nehushta dies in his arms, faithful at the end, and his acceptance of her at that final hour is satisfying and appropriately melodramatic. If you are looking for historical fiction about ancient Iran (Persia) this is a good bet. If you are looking for Biblical historical fiction, this book contains nothing found in the Bible nor is it's religious ideology compatible with a Judeo-Christian worldview, although the author implies that Zoroaster's all-wise god is Daniel's God of the Bible.
